5 Vinings Spots That Make Summer With a Preschooler Easy

Creative world school May 1, 2026

May rolls in and Smyrna’s whole summer rhythm shifts in a single week. The pool gates open, the cicadas crank up, and your preschooler suddenly wants to be outside from breakfast through bedtime. Lucky for Vinings families, this corner of metro Atlanta has built out one of the most preschool-friendly summer maps you’ll find inside the perimeter.

The trick this year is timing. A brand-new splash pad just opened minutes from your front door, the older park-and-playground favorites are still going strong, and the library storytime schedule slips back into place by late May. With a loose plan, you can run a full summer of low-cost outings without ever leaving Cobb County. Here’s how to do it.

Beat the Heat With the Brand-New River Line Splash Pad

Smyrna’s brand new River Line Park splash pad opens May 1st and it’s a serious upgrade for the southwest side of the city. The splash zone has interactive water features, a shaded restroom and concession building, and a small play area for toddlers who aren’t ready to commit to the big spray.

July around here runs hot. Smyrna afternoons can climb into the 90s with the heat index pushing higher, so the morning splash hour is your friend. Get there by 9:30 a.m., let your child run themselves out, and you’ll be home for lunch with a happy, water-logged kid.

Tolleson Park’s Pool and Splash Combo

For the neighborhoods closer to Smyrna proper, Tolleson Park is the long-standing favorite. The 26-acre park has a swimming pool, a separate splash pad, an obstacle-course-style playground, and a wide walking loop, which gives you four different things to do without leaving the property.

Try asking your child, “What does the splash pad smell like?” Sounds odd, but preschoolers’ answers will surprise you, and it’s a sneaky way to build descriptive vocabulary while everyone’s already wet. A Cool Drink of Water by Barbara Kerley is a thoughtful read for a water-themed week and connects the daily splash routine to bigger ideas about water around the world.

Head to Taylor-Brawner Park for Quieter Mornings

If a full pool day feels like too much, Taylor-Brawner Park along Atlanta Road has two play areas, one specifically built for toddlers. The toddler section sits in good shade for most of the morning, and the adjacent green space is perfect for snack picnics. Tuesday nights this summer, the park hosts Food Truck Tuesdays, which is a gentle introduction to the “stay out past dinner” feel of a Smyrna summer.

Smyrna Public Library’s Summer Storytime

Smyrna Public Library holds infant and toddler storytime for the Summer Reading Program. Sessions run Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. with an additional Wednesday session at 11:30 a.m. Registration is required ahead of time, including for siblings tagging along.

The Vinings Library branch through Cobb County also runs a baby and toddler storytime with songs, rhymes, and short books. Storytime is the kind of weekly anchor that makes a preschooler’s whole week feel more predictable, and it’s free. Stack it on top of a splash-pad morning and you’ve got a two-stop Tuesday handled.
