Beat the Heat: Best Katy Summer Activities for Preschool Kids

Creative world school May 22, 2026

Katy summers are no joke. If you’re parenting a 3- or 4-year-old through it, the goal is finding spots where your child can run, splash, and learn without anybody overheating, and our own Camptastic summer camp at Creative World School in Cypress is on the list for weeks when you want a structured option.

We pulled together a working Katy summer guide for families with preschoolers. Free splash stops, paid splurges worth the ticket, library hours that save your sanity, and a few tricks for the worst heat days. Katy in July can push 95 degrees with humidity that hits a 4-year-old fast. The practical rules are simple ones. Outdoor time before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m., two hydration breaks per outing minimum, a hat that shades the face and neck, and sunscreen reapplied every 90 minutes. If your child’s cheeks are bright red, pick the indoor backup.

Mary Jo Peckham Park Is Your Free Go-To

Mary Jo Peckham Park, the 32-acre Harris County Precinct 4 park off Gardenia Lane, is the best free play day in Katy and has been for years. The aquatic and fitness center is free for Harris County residents, the mini golf is low-cost, and the fishing lake stays stocked. You also get a playground, walking trail, amphitheater, and pavilion.

For a preschooler, Mary Jo Peckham is a six-attraction visit you didn’t overpay for. Bring a small fishing pole or just a bag of Goldfish crackers and settle in at a place that’s been raising Katy kids for decades.

Typhoon Texas Waterpark for a Big Splash Day

Typhoon Texas Waterpark off Katy Fort Bend Road is the splurge weekend that earns its ticket for preschoolers. The Typhoon Jr. area has multiple junior-sized waterslides, the four-story Gully Washer with an 800-gallon dump bucket, and an expanded splash pad with water features sized for kids under 54 inches. Parent seating sits right inside the kids’ area, which is exactly what you want when your 3-year-old needs you in eye contact at all times. Typhoon Texas posts current Typhoon Jr. attraction details on its official site.

If you go, get there at opening. The lines stay short until 10:30 and the shade is at its best in the morning hours!

Katy Branch Library Storytime Programs

The Katy Branch Library, part of the Harris County Public Library system, is the cool, free, low-stakes weekday anchor every Katy preschool family should be using. Their Flower Hour preschool storytime runs for ages 3 through 5 with age-appropriate stories, songs, and a take-home craft. Programs for younger siblings are also on the calendar. Check the Harris County Public Library event page for current times.

The branch is also a Family Place Library, which means there’s a dedicated early childhood area and parent resources on site. Make it your Tuesday and you’ve solved a third of your week.

Katy’s Indoor Backup Options for Hot Days and Afternoon Storms

Katy gets thunderstorms. Have backups ready before you need them. The Children’s Museum Houston runs a strong early childhood gallery and is worth a membership if you visit more than three times a year. Katy Mills Mall has a small carousel and a play area that doesn’t require buying anything. And your closest indoor trampoline park or play café will be packed but functional on the very worst weather days.

For more ideas tied to the area’s outdoor opportunities once the storm passes, our Katy parks and outdoor learning guide has more local picks.

At Creative World School in Cypress, we lean into Texas summer instead of fighting it. Camptastic runs all summer on rotating weekly themes, from hands-on science in Fizzy Labs to outdoor adventures in It’s a Bug’s Life, with special event days like Splash Spectacular water games and Race Day. Come register for Camptastic at our Cypress campus and meet our team this summer!
