Inquiry-Based Learning 101: Why Curiosity Matters
Creative world school Jul 11, 2025You hear it all day long: “Why?” “How come?” “What’s that?” These nonstop questions are signs that your child is naturally curious and geared up to learn. That spark of curiosity is one of the most powerful tools they have, and it plays a big role in how they understand the world. Inquiry-based learning taps into that curiosity and turns it into meaningful learning every day. And if you’re wondering how it could look for your child, we’d love to show you.

What is Inquiry-Based Learning?
Inquiry-based learning for children is all about turning curiosity into meaningful learning. Instead of just giving information, teachers guide children through the process of exploring their own questions. It might begin with something simple, like “Where do ants go?” and turn into a science walk, a story, an art project, and even a group discussion.
Teachers ask open-ended questions to get kids thinking more deeply. Simple prompts like “What do you think will happen?” or “How could we find out?” encourage children to come up with their own ideas and explore different ways to solve problems. Inquiry-based learning often includes working together, too. When children team up to build a city out of blocks or create a group mural they’re learning how to share ideas, listen to each other, and solve problems as a team.

Why Curiosity Matters in Early Childhood
Wild curiosity is more than just a quirky part of childhood. It plays a huge role in how children grow, think, and connect with the world around them. When preschoolers are encouraged to follow their interests and ask questions, they become more confident and motivated learners.
In fact, one large study found that children who showed higher levels of curiosity in kindergarten had up to higher scores in reading and math, with the strongest effects seen in children from lower-income households.
Curiosity in early childhood does so much more than boost academic skills. Curious kids tend to take initiative, think creatively, and stay excited about learning as they grow. They become confident problem-solvers and better communicators because they’ve had the chance to explore, ask questions, and figure things out on their own. Nurturing curiosity in preschool also helps build emotional strength. When children feel safe to wonder, make mistakes, and try again, they learn how to face challenges and celebrate their own success.
How Inquiry-Based Learning Works in a Preschool
At Creative World School, inquiry-based learning starts with one of the most powerful tools a preschooler has: a question. We ask children what they already know and what they’re curious about, then we build learning experiences around their ideas. If the topic is animals, one class might focus on pets while another dives into jungle creatures. Each group explores in its own way because every child brings something different to the table.
Instead of switching to a new theme each week, we spend a whole month on one big idea. That gives kids time to ask more questions, explore deeply, and really connect with what they’re learning. Whether it’s the ocean, the weather, or how things grow, the topic comes to life through play, stories, conversations, and lots of hands-on fun.
As they explore, children are also picking up important life skills. They learn how to share ideas, solve problems, express themselves, and work with friends. Teachers support them with playful activities that connect learning to everyday moments. If kids are cooking together, they might read a recipe, measure ingredients, mix things up, and take turns. It’s fun, it’s active, and it helps them see how learning is part of the world around them.
