Just a mile off the main road, you’ll find beautiful conservation lands and running rivers that still feel totally wild. For families with preschoolers, it’s the perfect mix of city fun and outdoor adventure. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Cypress Creek Natural Area

Cypress Creek is an awesome stretch of protected wetlands and tall pine trees right in our backyard! The trails are just the right length for little legs, and you’ll get to see the real Florida. Keep an eye out for herons wading in the water and slow-moving gopher tortoises munching on grass near the path. Go in the morning while the frogs are still singing. You can play a game with your little one to see how many different sounds they can hear before they actually spot the animal. It’s a great way to practice focusing and listening skills while enjoying the fresh air. Exploring the wilder parts of Wesley Chapel is exciting, but it’s important to keep safety in mind. Always stay on the marked paths to protect the fragile plants and give local wildlife plenty of space. If you spot a gopher tortoise, remind your preschooler to watch from a distance so the little guy doesn’t get scared back into his burrow. It’s also a great time to practice “walking feet” and holding hands near the water’s edge. Carrying a small first-aid kit with a few colorful bandages is always a smart move for those inevitable tiny scrapes that come with a big adventure!

Hillsborough River State Park

If you’ve got about twenty minutes, head just south of town to this amazing state park. It’s home to a beautiful moving river where you can spot turtles sunning themselves on logs and ospreys flying overhead. If you’re really lucky, you might even see a river otter splashing around. Kids love watching things move in the water. You can find a safe spot by the bank and drop a leaf in to see where the current takes it. Ask your child why they think the leaf moves faster in some spots than others. There aren’t any wrong answers, and it’s a fun way to start a conversation about how nature works. Pack a small backpack with plenty of water and some easy-to-eat snacks like apple slices or crackers to keep energy high. Because many of the paths wind through sunny pine flatwoods, don’t forget to apply sunscreen and a bit of bug spray before you hit the trail. Whether you’re exploring wetlands or a paved sidewalk, a pair of sturdy sneakers is much better than flip-flops for those cypress knees and occasional muddy spots.
