If your little one’s got energy to burn and a serious case of the wiggles,Tampa Palms and nearby New Tampa are full of fun places to explore! From shady playgrounds to storytimes and nature trails, there’s always something exciting to do close to home. These five activities are easy, preschooler-approved, and perfect for turning every outing into a major adventure.

1. Explore New Tampa Nature Park

This park is a favorite with families. There’s a smooth walking trail for scooters, a shaded playground with easy-to-climb equipment, and lots of chances to spot butterflies and birds. Your kid will love running under the trees and making up their own nature games.

Before you go, check out Tap the Magic Tree by Christie Matheson. It’s interactive, fun, and makes kids feel like they’re changing the world with a touch, just like real explorers.

2. New Tampa Community Park is Made for Moving

This one’s perfect for kids who like to go go go. The playground has toddler-friendly equipment, there’s plenty of open space to run, and it’s right next to the New Tampa Recreation Center, which is a fantastic bonus. Here, they offer preschool dance classes for three- and four-year-olds, plus gymnastics and movement programs for young kids. Pack water, sunscreen, and a change of clothes just in case things get wet or messy because exploration always wins.

3. Story Time at New Tampa Regional Library

Need a break from the Florida sun or just a little chill time? Swing by the New Tampa Regional Library for preschool fun. The kids’ area is bright, colorful, and full of fun. Your little one can cozy up with books, tackle puzzles, or join in a preschool storytime filled with songs, silly moves, and stories that spark big imaginations. Storytimes happen every week, so there’s always a reason to pop in and play.

While you’re there, grab a stack of books to take home. Early literacy helps build vocabulary, curiosity, and confidence, and the library makes it easy and free. Not sure where to start? Ask a librarian. They’re amazing at recommending books that match your child’s reading level and interests. Honestly, they’re one of the most overlooked resources for parents.

4. Go Wild at Lettuce Lake Park

Just about 10 minutes from Tampa Palms, Lettuce Lake Conservation Park is a go-to spot for families who love boardwalk strolls, wildlife watching, and wide-open green spaces. With shaded trails, a scenic river, and plenty of turtles, birds, and butterflies to spot, this park is full of little nature surprises around every corner. Stroll the boardwalk, climb up to the observation tower, and don’t forget to look out for turtles, birds, and maybe even an alligator sunbathing near the water.

And yes, it’s really called Lettuce Lake! The park’s named after the floating plants that cover parts of the lake and river, kind of like a big green salad. It’s not actual lettuce, but it definitely looks like it! These plants give fish and birds a safe place to hide and live, which means you’ll spot all kinds of creatures while you’re there. Lettuce Lake Park turns a regular weekend into a mini adventure without much planning. Bring comfy shoes, binoculars, snacks, and a sense of wonder.

5. Compton Park is a Hidden Gem (If You’re a Resident)

If you live in Tampa Palms Areas I or II, you’ve got a seriously awesome park in your backyard. Compton Park is reserved just for residents, and it’s packed with kid-friendly perks that make it feel like your own private playground.

The playground is great for younger kids, and the two open fields are perfect for bubbles, tag, or just running around. There’s also a junior Olympic-size heated pool, a children’s pool, basketball and tennis courts, and even pickleball if you’re feeling sporty. You’ll also find picnic areas, a pond with a viewing deck, and indoor meeting spaces for parties or events.
