The Fleet and Family Support Center at NSA Hampton Roads also offers free parenting programs, deployment support, and counseling for families adjusting to a new station. Events That Celebrate Your Family’s Service 

April is Month of the Military Child, and Chesapeake shows up for it. Chesapeake Public Schools participates in Purple Up Day every year, where students and staff wear purple to honor military-connected kids. Purple represents the blending of all service branch colors, and for a preschooler, wearing a purple shirt to school is a simple way to feel recognized. 

The Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads hosts an annual Military Family Festival every fall at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. It’s free with a military ID and built around family activities, games, crafts, and community resources. Throughout the year, the ASYMCA also runs early education programs, summer camps, and before- and after-school care designed with military schedules in mind. 

Every July 3, Chesapeake City Park hosts the Celebrate Freedom Concert and Fireworks, featuring the U.S. Fleet Forces Band. It’s free, and it’s one of the best summer nights in the area for families. If your little one is still getting used to loud sounds, try bringing ear protection and picking a spot near the back.
