Make the Most of Spring with These Fun Family Outings Near UCF

If you live near UCF, you already know what’s coming. By mid-June, every outdoor plan turns into a negotiation with the weather app. The humidity goes up, the afternoon storms show up daily, and anything past 10:00 am starts to feel like a lot. But right now, in April, the mornings are easy, the trails are dry, and your preschooler still has a solid window of really good outdoor time ahead. Take advantage of it while it’s here.

Leu Gardens Is Having Its Best Month

Harry P. Leu Gardens is about 20 minutes from UCF and April is when it really shows off. The butterfly garden is active, the roses are in full bloom, and there’s enough shade along the paths to keep a morning visit comfortable even when it’s warm. The walkways are paved and flat, which is great for preschooler legs. The garden layout is simple enough to let your child take the lead on where to go next.

Did you know Leu Gardens is home to over 200 different species of camellias that bloom throughout the year? Try giving your kid a job before you walk in. See if they can find five different colors of flowers before you reach the big oak tree. Counting colors is sorting, and sorting is early math. They’ll have no idea that’s what they’re doing!

Reading Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert is a great way to wrap up the trip. The colors are bold, the story is short, and it connects right back to what they just saw on the walk.

The UCF Arboretum Is Free and Five Minutes Away

Most parents near UCF don’t even know the Arboretum exists. It’s right on campus, it’s completely free, and it’s one of the quietest outdoor spots in the area. The walking paths wind through native Florida plants, a butterfly garden, and a small pond that’s usually full of turtles. For a preschooler, that’s a full morning.

Let your child lead the walk and point out anything they notice. Bugs, lizards, flowers, bark patterns. If they stop at something for more than ten seconds, that’s real focus. Ask them what they think it is before you tell them. That habit of guessing first and checking second is one of the most useful thinking skills you can encourage right now.

When the Storms Show Up, Orlando Science Center Steps In

By late April, the afternoon storms start rolling in. When the radar turns ugly, Orlando Science Center is about 20 minutes from campus and it’s one of the best indoor options for preschoolers. The KidsTown exhibit is built for kids under 48 inches and has water play tables and a pretend grocery store that preschoolers love.

KidsTown has a whole area called “Orange Grove” where kids can see how fruit gets from the tree to the store! Point to something in the exhibit and ask your child what they think it does before they touch it. Prediction before action is one of the easiest science habits to build.
