Oakstead Was Built for Families. Spring Is When It Really Shows.

Creative world school Apr 3, 2026

Oakstead wasn’t laid out by accident. The lakes, the greenways, the community parks at regular intervals, it was all built with the idea that young families would actually use it. Spring is when all that planning starts to make a lot more sense, because you’re finally outside enough to see it. If you’ve been in school-year survival mode since August, this is a good reminder of what’s right outside your door. Here’s what’s worth adding to the April lineup.

Conner Preserve

Conner Preserve is one of the larger natural areas in Pasco County, and it’s right there. The preserve covers thousands of acres of pine flatwoods and wetland habitat with trail access points that work well for young families. Spring is when the birds are most active, sandhill cranes, woodpeckers, and wading birds in the wetter sections, and the pine flatwoods have a different feel in April than any other month. Bring a small notebook or even just a piece of paper, and let your child draw one thing they see on the trail. A bird, a tree, a weird-looking bug, whatever gets their attention. Drawing what you observe is one of the earliest science skills there is, and it also buys you a quiet five minutes, which is its own reward.

Wilderness Lake Preserve

If you happen to live in Wilderness Lake Preserve, your family can enjoy the fishing pier, nature playground, pavilions, and a loop trail that’s manageable for preschoolers on a good day. It’s a park that works for different energy levels, open space if your child needs to run, lakefront if they need to slow down and watch something. Spring afternoons here are good for spotting turtles sunning on logs near the shore. See if your child can count how many they see without making noise. That’s patience disguised as a counting activity, which is pretty much the holy grail. In the Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming is a great one for this age and this kind of outing. It follows a caterpillar through a backyard meadow and does a nice job of making ordinary outdoor spaces feel worth paying attention to.

Family Walk Park

Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park

Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park has open green space, a lakefront setting, covered pavilions, and a relaxed pace that works well for families. It’s a lower-key destination than the bigger preserves, but easy and pleasant in the morning. Point to the water and ask your child what they think lives underneath. Open-ended questions like that work surprisingly well with preschoolers, and the answers are usually more interesting than whatever you were planning to say next. If you’re still getting to know the area, Settling into Oakstead: A Parent’s Guide to Life with Young Kids in Land O Lakes has a broader overview of local resources worth bookmarking. And for the full year-round picture, The Ultimate Land O’ Lakes Family Fun Guide covers a lot of ground.

Have a Camptastic Summer

Spring is also the right time to get ahead of summer. Creative World School Oakstead runs Camptastic, a themed summer camp with weekly themes, hands-on activities, and the kind of structured outdoor fun that makes August look a lot different than July without it. Spots go fast. Come see the school this spring. Schedule a tour and walk through the Exploratorium™, where the curiosity your child builds on these outdoor trips keeps going all week long. Ask about Camptastic while you’re there!
