Embracing St. Cloud’s Agricultural Heritage: Teaching Children About Food and Farming

Creative world school Jun 18, 2025

Has your preschooler ever asked where strawberries come from? Here in sunny Osceola County, we’re literally surrounded by the answer. St. Cloud’s deep agricultural roots go back to its early days as a farming and homesteading community. Today, our history bursts to life with kid-friendly farm visits where little hands can pick sun-ripened peaches, dig in garden soil, and see how food really grows. These are more than just fun outings. They are chances to spark curiosity, build healthy habits, and create sweet family memories rooted in the land around us. Ready to explore the best kid-friendly farm experiences St. Cloud has to offer? Let’s dig in.

How Nature Helps Preschoolers Grow

When preschoolers pick their first berry or pet a fuzzy goat, they’re doing more than just having fun. They’re learning with all their senses, right out in the fresh air. Research shows that time in nature helps young children focus better, stay active, and build stronger thinking skills. Here in St. Cloud, where farms and open spaces are everywhere, these moments help kids understand where food comes from and feel proud of their community.

Spring Fun on the Farm: U-Pick Adventures in St. Cloud (March–May)

In April, sweet pink peaches are ready to pick at Deer Park Peaches. Their U-Pick days are fun for the whole family, and you only pay for what you pick! Just around the corner, Chapman’s Berries invites families with buckets in hand from mid-March through May. With shady picnic spots and a small play area, picking blueberries and blackberries is easy and fun for everyone. Wrap up your spring evenings with fun at the Downtown Monthly Market, happening the last Wednesday of each month from February through May. It’s full of treats, music, and local vendors, plus plenty of kid-friendly activities your little one will love.

Summer in the Fields: Fresh Picks, and Farm Days (June – August)

When Florida turns up the heat, head to Mick Farms! Their farm stand buzzes daily with peak-season goodies. By late June, golden sunflowers paint the fields – perfect for photos or a sunny stroll. Grab local honey, fresh-picked corn, and maybe ingredients for dinner!

Fall Family Farm Days in St. Cloud: Pumpkins, Mazes, and More (SeptemberNovember)

October explodes with fun! Hastings Ranch transforms into a fall wonderland weekends from Oct 11-Nov 2. Navigate the corn maze, ride the barrel train, and pick pumpkins! At Mick Farms’ Pumpkin Harvest, kids can pick their perfect pumpkin starting the first weekend of October. It’s also a great place to snap festive family photos or fall-themed selfies. Be sure to follow them on social for specific dates!

Winter Wonders on the Farm (December – February)

December marks the start of strawberry season back at Mick Farms, and it’s a perfect time for little ones to explore the fields. Kids love searching for bright red strawberries tucked among the leaves, and the farm-made strawberry shortcake is a sweet way to celebrate their harvest. The fun continues at Deer Park, where peach season takes a break and citrus takes the spotlight. Families can pick juicy oranges during select days from Thanksgiving through January. Be sure to check their Instagram for the latest updates on picking times and fruit availability.

Grow Your Own Food Explorers Right at Home!

You don’t need acres of land to spark your child’s love for growing things! St. Cloud’s sunny weather makes it easy to turn your backyard or windowsill into a mini-farm adventure. Try planting “snack pots” with cherry tomatoes or strawberries where little hands can watch them ripen day by day. For dinner-time fun, create a “pizza garden” with basil and bell peppers they can proudly add to homemade pies. Want to combine nature and magic? Plant a “butterfly café” with milkweed and watch winged visitors flutter to your doorstep. Even a simple pot of herbs teaches patience, responsibility, and the wonder of nurturing life.
