Creative World School Riverview in the Brandon/Rivercrest area outside of Tampa had a blast with their learning adventures during their inquiry for To the Grocery Store! Here’s a sneak peek at their learning journey:

Who works in the Bakery? Children were guided in a discussion about the different people who work in the bakery. They learn that the Manager, server, cashier, and the baker all works in the bakery. After discussion children had to do a role play of the different people working in the bakery.

Today we learned about coupons we talked about all the different parts of a coupon we learned that there are bar codes to scan, pictures and names of the item to describe, what is on the coupon, and numbers to tell you the sale price. We also learned that there are coupons for food and non food items. We practiced our literacy skills by writing the words of the items we would like to see on sale.

After talking about jobs at a grocery store, we made name tags with different jobs to use in our housekeeping center! We also read “The little red hen makes a pizza” and we talked about our favorite pizza toppings and wrote about them in our journals. Then we did some math with pizza and cookies and also put together some cereal box puzzles!

The children practiced writing their names and they talked about what they could buy at the grocery store then drew a picture of items they would buy

Today during class we talked about the grocery store, we all had a paper bag and stuffed them with food. As we stuffed our grocery bags, we talked about the different foods we all had. We had fun putting our fruit and vegetables in our shopping bags together.

We enjoyed our field trip to Publix.

Pieces of the pie: Used a paper plate with numbers on the plate from 1-5 shape of a pie. Then used blue construction paper with numbers from 1-5 on the plate

We asked the class: where do stores get their vegetables and fruit? We talked about how items get shipped in from farms. We set up a bean planting experiment and made predictions on how they would grow.

Liam was given a “recipe” to make a math pizza. He had to count out the number of toppings and follow the recipe. He correctly counted all of his toppings for his pizza!

After we looked at and read some coupons, ad grocery stores ads, we tore them to make a collage.

Look at all the different color apples! Today Laila enjoyed feeling the texture making red, yellow and green. We enjoyed painting messy art.

How can you keep safe in the kitchen? We took the children to the dramatic area which has the kitchen and utensils. Children were guided in a discussion on the things they can and cannot do in the kitchen and how to keep safe while they help mom and dad! These safety directions for the kitchen will be displayed in the kitchen area of dramatic play.

Today Colin enjoyed gluing sticky coupons onto grocery bag, feeling the sticky texture on his hands.

Today we looked at some items we could find at the grocery store. We looked at the different words on the boxes and the numbers and wrote them on our papers. We also looked at the picture and guessed what would be in the box or can.

For our activity today we explored with mixing bowls. We all had a different sized bowl and had funny ingredients in the bowls to mix around with our whisk. We had fun mixing our pompoms, felt, cotton balls, and qtips in our bowl. We talked about how we mix our food in bowls, and things we can make to eat.

We collected various sizes of empty bottles and the teacher demonstrate how to blow into a bottle to create sound. Then the teacher pointed out how different bottles make different sounds. Then we encourage the children to try blowing the bottle.

Class trip to Publix: students helped scan items at Publix. The cashier helped Carter look for the bar code and help him read how much his item costs.

Today we made pizza. We talked about the different shapes and colors we see on the pizza, and how yummy they taste. We each got our own slice of pizza and glued on our toppings; we talked about how pizza dough is mixed in bowls and where we can buy it.

Today we talked about table manners! We looked at different foods and held up our “yes, please” sign if we liked the food or “no, thank you” if we didn’t. We also talked about different signs we see at stores.

After reading a story about signs we see at the store, we practiced writing some of the signs we see and some other grocery words. We also looked through store ads and chose 5 items to cut and paste on our “shopping list.” We had a lot of fun with this activity

“Kids Market” is open for Grocery shopping. Children learned about grocery items and words at the Grocery store. They picked what they wanted to buy and drew their favorite grocery store. Show and tell: grocery pamphlets

Bruce is doing a great job working with his friends taking turns to get the ingredients ready for their cooking activity he uses the rolling pin to flatten the cookies to make the crust.

Drawing a cupcake on Purple Construction paper: a student used scissors to cut the cupcake… she enjoyed cutting.

Today we washed fruits and vegetables in our soapy water sensory bin! Then we finished talking about the different departments in the grocery store and sorted foods into those categories. We also went shopping at our creative world grocery store! We chose 2 items to put in our basket and we used them to do a little math! We added the prices of our items together to see how much money we would owe the cashier. We had a lot of fun today!
