Preschool tuition is one of those numbers that can make a family’s whole budget wince. So here’s the part every parent of a three-year-old deserves to hear out loud. If your child turns four by September 1, the state of Florida will pay for a year of prekindergarten. No income limits, no catch. Just a birthday requirement and a little paperwork, and we’ll gladly walk you through both. The program is called VPK, we offer it right here on our Estero-area campus, and fall enrollment is open now! What Florida VPK Is and Who Qualifies

VPK stands for Voluntary Prekindergarten, Florida’s statewide program for giving every child a strong start before kindergarten. It’s free for every eligible four-year-old in Florida, no matter what the family earns. There are only two requirements. Your child must turn four on or before September 1 of the school year, and your family must live in Florida. If your child’s birthday falls close to the cutoff, you can use the benefit that year or wait until they’re five, and both choices are allowed.

The classroom side focuses on early reading, math, language, and social skills. Letters and their sounds, counting and patterns, taking turns, raising a hand, sitting for a story. These are the exact foundations kindergarten teachers hope to see walk through the door. For our corner of the state, the program runs through the Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida, which serves Lee, Collier, Glades, and Hendry counties, so families in Estero, San Carlos, Bonita Springs, and Fort Myers are all covered. And if the school year slips past you, children who didn’t attend may still qualify for a free summer VPK session, so a late start has a path forward.

How to Apply for VPK and Get Your Certificate

The application lives on Florida’s Early Learning Family Portal. You’ll create an account and upload just two things. First, proof that you live in Florida, like a utility bill, a photo ID, or a recent pay stub. Second, proof of your child’s age, like a birth certificate or passport. If the residency documents aren’t in your name because you live with family, there’s an affidavit for that, and the coalition’s Fort Myers office can even notarize it for you.

Once the application is approved, a certificate of eligibility appears in your portal account, ready to download. That certificate is your golden ticket. Bring it to the VPK provider you’ve chosen, they enroll your child, and the state handles the rest. If any of the paperwork gets confusing, the coalition’s Family Resource Advisors will walk you through it, and we’re glad to help too! The application itself costs nothing, so the only thing you’re spending is a few minutes with your documents. What the VPK Day Looks Like at Preschool at the Lamb

A free program still has to be a great program, so here’s what the year looks like with us. Our VPK classroom runs on the accredited Creative World School inquiry curriculum with iSTEAM woven in, and we hold Cognia accreditation, a quality standard most early education schools don’t carry. Classes stay small, so teachers know every child by name and notice the little wins the same week they happen. Mornings start with a warm welcome and time to settle in, then the day moves through learning centers, story time, outdoor play, and plenty of songs. Four-year-olds are busy people, and the day is built to keep their hands and minds moving.

Our weeks run on hands-on themes, and children spend time in our Exploratorium room building, testing, and asking why. Because we’re a faith-filled school on a church campus, the week also includes chapel with our Pastor and Children’s Ministry Director, Bible stories told at a preschooler’s speed, and plenty of kindness practice. Full-Day and Part-Time Care Around the VPK Hours

VPK covers the instructional part of the day, and for many working families that leaves a gap on either side. Our schedule closes it. Doors open at 7:00 am and stay open until 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday, so you can wrap morning and afternoon care around your child’s VPK hours to match your family’s routine. The VPK hours themselves are free, and the wraparound hours work like regular tuition enrollment, sized to your work week.
