Chesapeake Arboretum Woodland Trails for Little Explorers

The Chesapeake Arboretum off Oak Grove Road is the easiest place to start. It’s free, it’s open daily, and it sits on 48 acres of woodland with about 3.5 miles of trails winding under tall hardwoods. The paths are soft with wood chips and marked with colored blazes, so even short legs can manage a loop and nobody gets lost.

A little stream called Starr Run threads through the property and slips under 11 small wooden bridges. Counting those bridges is a built-in game for a preschooler who needs a mission. Fall is when the leaves here start to turn and drop, which makes a slow walk perfect for a leaf hunt. Bring a paper bag and let your child gather a few favorites, then try asking, ‘Which leaf is bigger than your hand?’ and let them do the comparing.

Oak Grove Lake Park for Lake Views and Forest Walks

A few minutes away, Oak Grove Lake Park hands you a different kind of morning. A flat 1.5-mile loop trail circles the 65-acre lake, easy enough for a stroller, with hardwood forest and wetlands along the way and a playground for when the walking wears thin. Six little fitness stations dot the path and double as silly stretching stops.

Since the trail hugs the water, there’s always something to watch. Herons stand in the shallows, turtles line up on logs, and dragonflies skim the surface. Cooler fall mornings bring more birds out, which makes this a great spot to practice listening. Settle on a bench, stay still for a minute, and see if your child can point toward a sound before they spot what’s making it.

Bergey’s Breadbasket Corn Maze and Petting Zoo

No Chesapeake fall is complete without a farm morning, and Bergey’s Breadbasket on Mount Pleasant Road is the classic one. Bergey’s Barnyard, the petting zoo right behind the bakery, runs a corn maze every fall, and this year’s opens September 12 and runs through Halloween, Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. The pens hold goats, sheep, cows, chickens, rabbits, pigs, and a few friendly farm cats, and kids 1 and under get in free.

For a preschooler, the animals are the main event. Grab a feed cup and show your child how to hold it out flat, then let the goats do the rest. That rough little tongue on a small palm is a sensory lesson nobody has to plan! The maze covers ten acres this year, so stick near the edges with the littlest ones, or let your child call the turn at every fork. Saturdays add a hayride and a shot on the corn cannon for the older siblings.

Northwest River Park Trails and Paddleboats

When you want a bigger adventure, Northwest River Park gives you 763 acres along the Northwest River and some of the best nature space in the city. It’s open 9:00 am to sunset year-round, and fall mornings are ideal here because the heat is gone and the crowds are thin.

There’s a playground for burning off early energy, nearly 8 miles of shaded trails split across seven routes, and paddleboat and canoe rentals if your crew is up for a calm float. Every kid needs a life jacket on the water, no matter how still it looks. The trails are wide and gentle, the mix of pine and hardwood gives you plenty to spot overhead, and fall brings in the sparrows and juncos, so a patient family can spot a good handful of birds without leaving the path.
