Your Kid Deserves an Amazing Summer. Here’s How to Find the Right Camp.

Creative world school Apr 8, 2026

You open your laptop to look up summer camps, and forty-five minutes later you’ve got twelve tabs open, three waitlist forms you haven’t filled out, and no idea where to start.

It happens to almost every parent. It doesn’t have to be this hard.

Start with What Your Child Actually Loves

Before you look at a single program, think about your kid. What do they gravitate toward on a slow weekend morning? Do they drag every craft supply out of the cabinet? Do they want other kids around every single second? Do they disappear into their own little world and build something for hours?

That’s your starting point, and it matters more than any camp brochure.

The American Camp Association’s National Camp Impact Study found that high-quality, interest-driven activities are one of the strongest predictors of a positive camp experience. When kids are doing something that actually clicks with them, everything else falls into place. For preschool-aged kids especially, look for programs centered on hands-on exploration, creative play, and social connection. Those are exactly the social and emotional skills they’re already working on at this age, so a great camp just gives them more room to grow.

Look for Learning Woven into the Fun

Our Camptastic program is a great example of what this looks like in practice! Each week has its own theme, and the activities are designed around it in a way kids genuinely get excited about. One week they’re on Wonder Island, working together to survive a crash landing and solve mysteries. Another week is Fizzy Labs, where they mix, test, and experiment their way through science that’s joyfully messy. There’s also Bright Idea, where kids dream up inventions and pitch them. Game Changers, where classic games get a giant life-size twist. And a whole week dedicated to bugs, which is exactly as delightful as it sounds!

Every theme comes with special event days built right in, so there’s always something new to look forward to even within the same week.

That’s the kind of structure you’re looking for in any camp worth registering for. If you want to bring that same spirit of curiosity home, these inquiry-based activities for preschoolers are a great starting point.

The Importance of Being Little by Erika Christakis is a really good read on why young children need rich, hands-on experiences. It reframes what a great summer can actually do for your child’s development.

Meet, Greet, and Experience it for Yourself

You can have a great theme and a beautiful space, and it still falls flat with the wrong people running it.

Ask about staff-to-child ratios. For preschool-aged kids, 1:6 or better is the benchmark to look for. Ask how staff are trained, not just in activities but in child development. And pay attention to how they talk about kids during any tour or info session. You can tell pretty quickly when someone genuinely loves this age group! It’s also totally reasonable to ask how the camp keeps you in the loop during the day. A responsive team makes a real difference.
