5 Fun and Easy Ways Preschoolers Can Celebrate Labor Day

Creative world school Aug 29, 2025

Labor Day sneaks up right at the end of summer, and for families with preschoolers, it’s the perfect excuse to slow down, play outside, and celebrate together. While you may think about barbecues or the history of the holiday, little ones just know it feels special to spend the day with family. No vacation plans? No problem. A handful of easy activities can help your preschooler join the celebration and start to understand what this holiday means right at home.

This holiday honors all the people who work hard to help our schools, towns, and families like teachers, nurses, farmers, construction crews, and delivery drivers. It’s a day to say thank you and to show appreciation for all kinds of work. Labor Day has been around for over 100 years, and it’s a chance to rest, relax, and recognize the helpers who make our world go round.

A Picnic Made Just for Them

Preschoolers love eating outside. Pack a basket with easy foods like fruit, sandwiches, and crackers, then let your child add in a favorite snack or even invite a stuffed animal along. The magic of a picnic is in the little things, like spreading out a blanket under a tree and giggling together while the ants try to join the party.

And of course, no picnic is complete without a book. Labor Day by Carmen Bredeson is a classic one to bring along. It’s simple enough for preschoolers to follow and full of real-life pictures that make the holiday really come to life.

Handmade Thank Yous for Community Helpers

Labor Day is a wonderful time to help preschoolers see how important everyday workers are. Set out paper, crayons, markers, and stickers, then encourage your child to make a card or draw a picture for someone who helps in your neighborhood. It could be a firefighter, a teacher, a mail carrier, or even the person who collects the trash each week.

After decorating, deliver the cards together. Watching your child hand a thank you note to a smiling librarian or grocery clerk can be the highlight of their day. A great read to go along with this activity is Helpers in Your Neighborhood from the National Geographic Kids Readers Pre-Reader series. It’s filled with real photos and simple sentences, making it easy for young children to connect the helpers they read about with the people they see every day.

Host a Backyard Parade with Big Energy

Who says you have to go downtown for a Labor Day parade? Your family can create one right in the backyard. Hand out pots and wooden spoons for drumming, or make simple shakers from rice and plastic bottles. Add paper flags decorated with crayons or paint, and you have a marching band ready to go.

Labor Day parades have been a tradition since the very first one took place in New York City on September 5, 1882. Workers marched through the streets to celebrate the work they did and to stand together with pride. Today, parades are still held to honor all kinds of jobs and the people who do them. Your backyard version might be smaller, but it can still be packed with music, color, and excitement.

Cooking Together in the Kitchen

Labor Day usually means cookouts, but preschoolers don’t need a grill to join in. Let them help prepare simple but healthy delicious snacks in the kitchen, like fruit bowls, mini sandwiches, or a green smoothie. Not only will they be boosting their self-esteem and independence, they’ll also be improving their fine motor skills and be more excited to taste their new creation.

Talk to your child about how cooking is also a type of “work” that helps the family. Preschoolers love to feel important, and being part of meal prep shows them how their work matters too.

Tale One Last Adventure of Summer

Give your preschooler a chance to choose one last adventure before waving summer goodbye. Call it your “Labor Day Adventure” and let them help plan what to do. It could be a swim at the community pool, a nature walk where you search for bugs and leaves, or a trip to the playground for one more big swing into the sky.

Staying close to home? Check your local library for any special storytimes or holiday crafts. Some downtown areas host family-friendly Labor Day events like live music, food trucks, or farmers markets. Even a slow walk through your neighborhood, scooters included, can feel special when you call it an adventure. Keep it simple, pack snacks and water, and snap a quick family photo before the sun sets. At bedtime, ask your child what the favorite part of their day was. Preschoolers love to narrate their own (epic!) adventures, and looking back at a photo helps them hold onto that memory just a little longer.
